Mary Baldwin College Students

Last week it was great to have Irene Sarnelle and her students from Mary Baldwin College visit.  We always look forward to them dancing with us.  The young ladies brought their enthusiasm, energy, and knowledge of dance to brighten the evening.  They easily picked up the dances we taught. Every student danced almost every dance.

Also a credit to Irene's teaching,  she was taking her students to visit a local second grade class to teach them some dances.  Just as I say, "Share the joy, dance with a child!!"

Tom Masterson from Boulder, CO visited and taught a few dances.
Levan Polkka - performed here by a Finish Group which reintroduced it

but made a hit by Japanese Anime

Tom also taught Ana Visa, for which I couldn't find information. I did video Tom teaching the dance.

He also introduced Goralski from Poland.  Below are some notes on the dance.

Dance into Spring

I probably shouldn't say it too loudly but if today is any indication - Spring is here to stay!

I've been busy teaching a couple of Basque dances to some 4th and 5th grade school children.  They performed them in a Spanish program this past week. The 4th grade did Baztan Dantza

The 5th grade performed Eskudantza de Imotz

In our regular Wednesday meeting Lindy taught Isu byala nedo from Bulgaria.  It has a beautiful  and soothing melody.  The video clip below shows a group doing it the same way that Lindy taught the dance followed by dance notes from Folk Dance Federation of California.

Episode 8 of Another Day, Another Dance starts tomorrow. This month's show features Susan teaching Orijent and interviews of a Mother and her daughter.  Tune in tomorrow at 2:30 on the web:

Susan O. taught Al Sedenu from Israel
I couldn't find a video of it.  Anyone out there find one?

There is an interesting little story that someone made up incorporating the names of some of the dances,

Zensko Oro ze Raka

but according to

This is made up, not real. To see how it is really danced at weddings - the men all dance, with towel-gifts (tenki darove) from the bride's family placed on their shoulders. Type after the youtube part watch?v=KxX6-h20CFQ or search "bir baskadir makedon" or "mareseska"
